See Inside Guacamole's Colorful NuLu Location

Guacamole Modern Mexican, formerly Guaca Mole Cocina Mexicana,  opened its new location today at 900 E. Market St. in NuLu, just in time for National Margarita Day.

Guacamole, whose sister restaurants include La Bodeguita de Mima and Taco Luchador,  previously had a location in Lyndon. Its new home used to house Rye on Market.

Their menu offerings include lamb shank coloradito, keto-friendly “Tah-Ketos,” cochinita a la leña and duck flautas.

They also serve 50 tequilas and 25 mezcals. Two of their specialty drinks, both of which are pictured in the slideshow above, are the Swirl Margarita and the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. The latter features a skull that smokes when alcohol is poured onto it.

The entire restaurant is eminently Instagrammable, inside and out. On the first floor is a room decorated with illustrations and photos of Frida Kahlo, lit by lettered neon signs that say “TACOS & CHILL” and “FEED ME TACOS & TELL ME I’M PRETTY.” Even the (non-toilet side of the) women’s bathroom on the second floor is photo-ready: there’s a literal red velvet throne surrounded by a wall of pink flowers. Near the indoor entrance to the balcony is a pair of wings stylized like they came straight from an alebrije, a colorful Mexican figurine of an animal or mythical creature, of which there are also many inside the restaurant. The owners sourced them from their own trips to small towns in Mexico.

Of course, what many people first see when they arrive at the space is the giant mural of Frida Kahlo behind the balcony and the butterflies near the front door, both of which were designed by this year’s Kentucky Derby Festival poster artist, Kacy Jackson. (You might spot him in one of the pictures of his murals.)

Right now, the restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m.-10 p.m, and its open hours, including lunches, are slated to expand in the future. For now, you can reserve your spot through OpenTable.
